Who Are Byron Bay Runners and when do we run?

Our members are made up of runners of all ages, with a fairly even split between males and females and juniors to masters age (+30yrs) athletes. Most of the Junior athletes (8-12yrs) compete in school track and cross-country events. Seniors (12-18yrs), Open and Masters age members enjoy taking part in anything from local fun runs such as Parkrun, to road- and trail marathons and often compete at state and inter-state competitions. We usually have teams entered in the following annual events:

Gold Coast Marathon Festival (all events), Lamington Classic, 6ft track marathon, Great Ocean Road, UTA, GNW, Sydney (Blackmores) Running Festival (all events), Melbourne Marathon Festival, Byron Lighthouse Run.

Alternatively, let us know if you have a particular event in mind, and we can get a team together.
Club Coaches

CAROLINE: Caroline is one of the founding members of the club, coaching for over 10 years, and is an accredited High Performance coach (IAAF level 2 Middle-Long Distance and Athletics Australia level 2 Advanced. middle-long distance and sprints, hurdles, relay and steeplechase). Professionally, Caroline is a Psychologist with a particular interest in performance management strategies (goal setting, motivation, mental resilience).

She currently manages the weekly training schedules for the junior and senior squads, and has coached several runners through to podiums at All-Schools NSW State and National Championships in athletics and cross-country. Although specialising in track distances, Caroline enjoys working with runners of any age and fitness levels, and can provide individualised training programs as part of your club membership for any road distance.

Always a runner, Caroline enjoyed both track (400m and 800m) and cross-country as a junior, competing in national cross country championships (in the UK). After a decade or so of 'recovery' (for career and kids) she is now a competitive masters age athlete, having won state and national medals in open-age and masters championships over 5,000m (track), 10,000m (road) and marathon distances.

CHRIS(TINE) is one of the founding members of Byron Bay Runners, and currently coaches Tuesday evening adult/masters training. Chris is a level 2 Athletics Australia Recreational Running coach, with interests in long-distance recreational running. A committed, competitive runner herself in road and trail events (anything from a Parkrun to trail challenges such as the Lamington Classic) Chris can offer individualised training programs and general training advice to adults looking to achieve running goals from 'getting off the couch' to competitive Half-Marathons.

SIMON is one of the club founders, and a highly accomplished ultra-/trail runner with some serious buckles on his belt! Always willing to have a chat after a run, Simon runs the legendary Thirstday-night, Thursday trail run from the Suffolk Park hotel. If you are looking to getting into trail running, Simon has probably run most of them, and can give you advice on logistics, nutrition and his own training. As well as running Thursday nights social run, he is a level 2 Recreational Running coach (currently coaching junior squads) to state athletics and cross-country championships.

FINN is a level 1 Community Athletics Coach, who has come through the ranks of the club as a junior and senior squad athlete. Finn has an ever-increasing list of impressive results in both cross-country and athletics at state level, as well as club Summer Sizzler champion in 2016-17 (and an impressive parkrun PB to boot!). Finn provides assistance with the junior age group squads for Tuesday track sessions.

DENISE is a level 1 Community Athletics Coach, who has been a runner all her life: starting in the UK, and training and racing throughout UK, Europe and Australia, Denise is highly experienced, super-knowledgeable and valued by all for her encouragement and motivational skills!

GARY is a level 1 Community Athletics Coach, who moved fairly recently to the Bay, but has become a firm favourite within the running community! Known for his positive attitude, wit and great topics of conversation, Gary makes any run fun. Just beware his navigation skills (previous winner of the BBR Fluoro Beanie).

PETE is a level 1 Community Athletics Coach, who has an impressive history as a track athlete in middle-distance events including steeplechase. Having lapsed from competition in the last decade or two, Pete is now firmly on the comeback as a masters age athlete. Assistant Coach with junior and senior squads. :
